Article Title: Drive-To-Drive Copy with Data LifeGuard 11.2 (Download)
Category Resource Page: InternalHardDrives

Article:
With Western Digital Hard Drives is included a free application "Data Lifeguard Tools (dlgsetup11_win.zip)."

Download: zip/WD-Data-Lifeguard-Tools-dlgsetup11_win.zip

It allows you to do a Drive to Drive Data Copy which allows you to copy many files that would otherwise not copy because they are in use by the operating system. This is the most useful part for me, other parts of the software can be helpful, but you can do them from the Windows Disk Management Console and various other software applications. This Drive-to-Drive Data Copy is the only one I know of that works the way it does and will skip files that are too deep in the path or have corruption, but will keep going otherwise - along with reporting these failures in a log file for you to check at your leisure.

For copying files off a failing hard drive fast, or making a backup of some set of directories - this is essential. This saved me from booting up Knoppix to do the same thing - not that there is anything wrong with Knoppix but I'd rather be able to use the computer normally during the copy and run the files as I go along.

It also has other Data Utilities such as 'Reformat Paritions' and 'Partition Unallocated Space', Hard Drive and Jumper Information.

All the utilities have worked with other hard drives from my experience - not just Western Digital ones.

Just wanted to add a note - this software is still quite useful with Windows 7. Just set it for Windows XP SP3 Compatibility Mode when you install it and it will install. Once it is installed, it works without any issues that I've seen. I especially use it for Drive to Drive Data Copy - much better than using Windows built in utilities imho. I probably wouldn't try modifying the partition tables perhaps, but for what I do - it works.
